Committee
President – Ridwan Barbhuiyan
Hello there PhySoc! I’m Ridwan, a Physics with Astronomy student, and I’ve been tasked with running your society for the 2011/2012 period!
As President, my duties are to ensure that everything in the society is running at its optimal performance, that we achieve our goals, both short- and long-term, as a committee, and, most importantly, that you have the best experience possible. The underlying principle of my goals for PhySoc is integration (honestly, no pun intended!) – to get everybody involved with the society in its many different facets.(More details here)
All in all, I hope, and want, that you enjoy being a part of PhySoc, that you make the most of your time with us, and that we make the most of our time with you. If you have any enquiries, please feel free to contact me!
Enjoy the year, and take care!
Ridwan
Vice President – Claire Blejean
Hello everyone! I am a 3rd year student (which makes me feel quite old!), with Sophie, we make for the feminine touch of the society. I wanted to get more involved with Physoc and thought that vice-president was the perfect place. Apart from attending the meetings and talking to fellow physocers around, I am also the treasurer, so I make sure that money comes in and out as it should. Feel free to talk to me if you have questions about Physoc or just want a chat!
Socials – Rory Penman & Jamie Vovrosh
Hey how are you doing? We’re Jamie and Rory, true LADS of the physics society. We,re here to make sure you have the most awesome and varied year possible! We aim to sort you out with cheapest and phun night out, all over Southampton. It’s not all about the drinking though, so we will be providing non-alcoholic events throughout the year too, which will be as fun and entertaining as our other events!
Please use the e-suggestion box if you feel you have social ideas we should include or alternatively come and hunt us down in and around the beautiful building 46 for a chin wag! PhySoc love x
Outreach – Chris Frohmaier
I became Outreach Officer because I wanted to pass on my enthusiasm for physics so that young people will be inspired to become scientists. I have big plans to put on science shows in school assemblies and make them as loud, exciting and informative as possible.
In my spare time I play centre forward for the Physics football team and in the 5-a-side league. I also enjoy building model cars and aeroplanes as well as working examples of the Physics we learn, for example a coil gun.
My goal once I graduate is to go into Astronomy research or experimental physics.
Media and Communications – Tom Haskins
Long ago in a galaxy far, far away… well, Bristol, Tom Haskins learnt how to use photoshop and started creating awesome visual work. He perhaps even considered a career in the field one day. But through life’s toils, twists and turns, he ended up studying Physics where as “beautiful” as maths is, it just didn’t quench his creative thirst.
I’m your officer for Media and Communications. I’ll be creating the snazzy posters you’ll see around, the hoodie and hopefully revamping some of the key visuals for Physoc. Throughout first year at Uni, I felt I was lacking creative drive. After working in a graphics agency at home for 5 years, I fancied dabbling a bit here! Graphic Design is not as clear cut as the blatant fact that you can normalise a quantum wave function by integrating between minus infinity and infinity and equalling it to one. No, it’s much more exciting when there’s no right answer! I am hugely stimulated by great graphics and I strive to provide Physoc with just that.
Mentors Coordinator – Tom Edwards
Hey everyone, I’m Tom Edwards the new mentors officer for Physoc. My role is to establish a good mentoring system between students, where the 3rd and 4th years help out with the 1st and 2nd years. My plan is that by next year the mentoring system will be a large part of Physoc and a very useful resource for all students. I am always open to ideas on how it should be run and if anyone wants to get involved contact me!
Sports – Dave Wilson
Coming Soon contact Dave
Webmaster – Szymon Prajs
Hi, I’m Szymon and I am the webmaster for Physoc. I take care of the amazing website we’ve got (including updates, maintenance and other interesting things). I also maintain committee email accounts ensuring they can always access them to do the great work they do for Physoc. On weekly bases my responsibility is to make sure that each off you fellow physicists receives our lovely newsletter in the same appealing format and most importantly on time. If you have any questions related to the website don’t hesitate to contact me
Balls – Ben Sowden
Hi, I’m Ben and I’m your Balls Officer. I organise the societies balls which are held around twice a year where we all dress up in suits and posh frocks and have a whale of a time. I have many great ideas for this year’s balls but I am always looking for more and help in general organising and running the balls so please get in touch if it is your cup of tea. Hope to see you at my balls.
Secretary – Sophie Wiltshire
Hi, I’m Sophie and I’m the secretary for Physoc. This means I make the notes at the meetings and type up the minutes afterwards. My main jobs are just to make sure all the committee members know what they have to do after each meeting and to make sure Tom doesn’t ramble on too much in the weekly newsletter. That’s about it, Physoc love x :)
Sponsors Officer – Chris Baker
Hey avid-physicist. I’m Chris, your Physoc sponsors officer. “What the heck is that?”, I hear you scream. Well basically it’s my job to form mutually beneficial arrangements with organisations and companies to help promote their business whilst acquiring useful assets for our societies. Put another way, I beg companies for money and sweet deals. Historically this money has gone towards our summer and winter balls but this time round I’m hoping to work with all the other shiny shiny people on the committee to get as much out of everything we do as possible. Got any fantastic ideas for deals, sponsorship, or free stuff? Let me know and I’ll be eternally thankful and nice to you.
Freshers’ Rep – Jay Lewis
Hi, I’m Jay Lewis and I am the current Freshers Rep. I initially didn’t really want this position and was bet 10p to do it by a friend (which he still hasn’t given me) and consequently won the vote due to the sadistic nature of physicists. However, I’m very glad I succumbed to peer pressure as it’s been a great opportunity to learn about the ins and outs of PhySoc and to be involved in a our wonderful society is a great feeling. I aim to continue the tradition of freshers packs as it was a reassuring feeling when nervous about the rigours of university to receive information mainly detailing where the pubs are and realising that physicists never really grow up :)
