Hello Physoc!

President

Ridwan Barbhuiyan

Hello there PhySoc! I’m Ridwan, a Physics with Astronomy student, and I’ve been tasked with running your society for the 2011/2012 period!

As President, my duties are to ensure that everything in the society is running at its optimal performance, that we achieve our goals, both short- and long-term, as a committee, and, most importantly, that you have the best experience possible. The underlying principle of my goals for PhySoc is integration (honestly, no pun intended!) – to get everybody involved with the society in its many different facets (more details here).

- Making the society completely transparent (committee meetings open to all members, published minutes, transactions, etc.).
- Enhancing the Mentoring scheme. Sometimes, you may find that you just don’t understand certain concepts within the scope of our course, and would ideally want it to be explained to you from somebody on the same level as you. On the other hand, you may want to test yourself on a subject you’re pretty comfortable with, and one of the best ways to do this is by explaining it to somebody else. So why not combine these two situations and have students teach students? This will establish better relations between the year groups, as well as making our degrees that much easier, and enjoyable!
- Staff are our friends! Yes, they may be teaching us, evaluating us, or even terrifying us (Sanja…), but they’re the same as you and I, and so I’d like to get the staff (academic, support, demonstrators, etc.) more involved with PhySoc, be it on socials or just feedback on how the society’s going.
- Expansion. Whilst we have a great community within PhySoc, we’re not the only society around on campus, or the only Physics Society in the nation, so it’s time to reach out to other societies, so we can all benefit from each other’s careers talks, socials, contacts, and ultimately, each other’s company! There’s a world of friendly faces to meet and greet out there, so let’s get meeting and greeting!

All in all, I hope, and want, that you enjoy being a part of PhySoc, that you make the most of your time with us, and that we make the most of our time with you. If you have any enquiries, please feel free to contact me!

Enjoy the year, and take care!
Ridwan
